Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey FMs hold a trilateral meeting in Antalya
Afghan Foreign Minister Haneef Atmar, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu held a trilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum on Sunday.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said that the diplomats condemned the continuing high level of violence in Afghanistan and “particularly condemned attacks targeting civilians.”
According to the statement, the diplomats reiterated that sustainable peace can be achieved only through an inclusive Afghan-led and Afghan-owned political process that aims at a permanent and nationwide ceasefire as well as an inclusive political settlement.
They also emphasized their commitment to support a sovereign, independent, democratic, and unified Afghanistan, the statement said.
This comes as that Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman in a statement on Friday said that no tangible progress has been made with Afghan peace talks being held in its capital Doha so far.
He said the announcement of the withdrawal of U.S. and foreign forces from Afghanistan had added to time pressure on the talks.
“Our goal is to reach a ceasefire between the Afghan government and Taliban and consensus on the future of the country,” Rahman said.
