On World Refugee Day, EU reaffirms support for displaced Afghans

Marking World Refugee Day, the European Union renewed its commitment to supporting millions of displaced Afghans across Afghanistan and neighboring countries, including Iran, Pakistan and parts of Central Asia.

In a statement posted Friday, the EU mission in Afghanistan said it was providing aid to refugees, returnees and internally displaced people (IDPs), with a focus on protection, education and sustainable livelihoods.

“As part of a €47 million partnership with the International Organization for Migration, the European Union is helping Afghans gain access to health care, education, job opportunities and legal protections,” the statement said. The initiative emphasizes assistance for women and vulnerable groups, while also supporting host communities affected by mass displacement.

The EU also highlighted its collaboration with the United Nations refugee agency to advance long-term solutions for Afghan refugees and IDPs. These efforts include expanding access to energy, services and women-led economic programs in several provinces.

The statement comes as millions of Afghans continue to face precarious conditions amid economic crisis and regional instability. The EU said its support aimed to build resilience and restore a measure of stability and hope to displaced communities.
