Khalilzad Meets Afghan Negotiators in Doha

The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Doha on Thursday, Reuters reported. He met with the negotiating team from the republic side, according to Fawzia Koofi, a republic-side negotiator, and is expected to meet with the Taliban.

Fawzia Koofi, a negotiator for the republic’s side in Doha talks, tweeted that she and the team had a “fruitful meeting” with Khalilzad “on the prospect of peace and the way forward.”

She continued: “Once again emphasized on the important role women and new generation can play through the process and post peace agreement.”

Khalilzad’s trip to Doha marks his first diplomatic tour to the region since US President Joe Biden took office.

Prior his trip to Doha, Khalilzad spent three days in Kabul where he met Afghan political leaders including President Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, the head of High Council of National Reconciliation.
